Long Island SEO - SEO Process

Step 1: Initial Analysis - You cannot move forward without analyzing the website you want to optimize. The analysis will provide a better understanding on what is wrong (if anything) when it comes to on-site SEO. Things like the wrong title tags or other metadata will be looked at to see if what is on the website is on par with the important keywords the website should be ranked for.

Step 2: Keyword Research and Analysis - Analyzing the keywords in more depth is important to understand where the site ranks today and if the website is even optimized for those specific keywords. Once a keywords list is researched and refined, then you can move to the next step with a plan in place.

Step 3: Competitor Analysis - What is the competition doing and how do they stack up? To be one step ahead of the competition means you need to understand what they are doing to get ranked on top of the search engines. Analyzing the competitors websites means check which keywords they rank high for and understand how they are utilizing those keywords on their site and off-site to see if it is worthwhile to challenge them.

Step 4: Sitemap & RSS Feed - Creating and submitting a sitemap means you are allowing the search engines into your website so they can crawl it and index your web pages into their search engines. This will give you the ability to deny the search engines access to certain websites if you do not want them indexed. For example, an employee log in page probably will not help much to be indexed by the search engines. An RSS feed will come in handy so you can take all of your content and make it very easy for website visitors to subscribe to it. This will alert them every time new content is published, plus allow them the ability to spread the content as well.

Step 5: Search Engine & Directory Submission - Submitting the website to the search engines and other directories is important. These days this isn’t as necessary as it was years ago, because search engines like Google will pick up your website no matter what. But it is a good idea to go through the motions and setup everything correctly. There are other search engines and directories that still should be submitted to, so the site gets indexed as quickly as possible.

Step 6: Social Bookmarking - Setting up accounts on all the major social bookmark websites (Digg.com, StumbleUpon, Delicious, etc) is important for multiple reasons. First, its good to setup the accounts and optimize each account as well. Yes, it is time consuming, but creating each account and placing all the information you can (company name, link to website, company address, etc) will only help increase the domain strength of your own website. Once all the accounts are created, as content is published it should also be linked to all the social bookmarking websites as well.

Step 7: Blog & Press Release Creation - Today, the blog has become a necessity in the SEO process. Since content is king on the Internet, it is very important to publish that content using a blog. Blogs are built specific for SEO and any content that is placed on them is automatically optimized for SEO purposes. WordPress is the smartest way to go when it comes to blog software, plus there is about 10-15 plugins that should be installed in a WordPress blog before it is launched. These plugins will help tremendously with SEO. As the content is created, it should be formatted into a press release and submitted.

Step 8: Article Submission - After content is published on a blog, it should be utilized for article submission. There are different types of submission services and the type of service you use will determine how to optimize the article. For example, when we optimize an article we create 3 versions of that article. The reason is, it is smarter to not submit the same article over and over. Why? Search engines do not like duplicate content. The way we optimize the article will actually create thousands of versions of that same article, so when it is submitted to hundreds of directories, there is no worry about a negative impact from duplicate content.

Step 9: Link Popularity - Creating links back to your website is very important. These are called backlinks. They are the most important aspect of the entire Internet marketing campaign. But, as I said before, just building backlinks (which most companies try to sell as a service) will not work. It is the entire process working together that makes this successful. There are many ways to create backlinks and this does get tricky because there are WRONG WAYS TO BUILD BACKLINKS. If backlinks are made the WRONG WAY then your website can get PENALIZED or BANNED on Google. When I say banned, I mean your website can disappear from Google. Yes, I am being serious. If this happens and you are dependent on Google for your company to survive then there is a good chance you could go out of business. It is very important to make sure that the backlinks that are being built for your website will not be considered spam to the search engines.

Step 10: SERP Report - SERP means Search Engine Results Page. After all the major steps in getting the SEO process moving forward, it is obviously important to keep track of everything to see what is working and what isn’t. If one type of marketing is working better than another, then you should put more time into the one that works.

Social Media – I wanted to bring up social media because most companies don’t fully understand how to take advantage of it. For larger companies it is easier to understand the need because their brands are already built so there isn’t much work involved in getting followers on Twitter or subscribers on YouTube or friends on Facebook. But for a smaller company, it will take time to build a following. It is very important to build social media sites for the long-term. That is the way a company needs to think about all the steps mentioned here, it is a long-term process. Even if you only put a couple hours a week into it or have a small budget, you have to think long-term.
