Everyone is saying video is where the Internet is going, but how do you optimize a video website? The first question that comes up is, do you use YouTube or a video hosting service? With some testing I have done, YouTube certainly outranks any video hosting service on Google, obviously. But do you run YouTube videos on your website when you are trying to build a brand. Usually the answer is no, but I have seem some big brands switching to Google.

With American Health Journal, they are using a video hosting service and building a YouTube channel. The YouTube channel will certainly build some backlinks and drive traffic to the site, so they will get some benefits. But just using YouTube, probably smarter for SEO, but not smart for branding.

When it come to on-site SEO, the site is built on WordPress so you know it will be optimized. With the lack of actual words on the site, how does a site like this get indexed in search engines.

After the first couple of months of the site being live, the doctors names have been getting indexed and showing up on page 1 Google. This makes sense since the doctors names aren’t very competitive keywords. The site is broken down into doctors, hospitals and medical videos.

The medical videos will be hard to compete on competitive terms like diabetes, cancer, breast cancer, ADHD and so on. The one difference with this site is, they are going after the question and answers. They will have over 10,000 videos that will be question and answer based. For example:

What Is Osteoporosis
Why Use Cosmetic Fillers
Why Should You Immunize Your Child

In the end, I believe video sites are harder to compete on when it comes to SEO. Will see what this site can accomplish over the next year.

How much is first page Google is a very popular question. You might be surprised on the difference between the #1 and #2 spot. There is no way to give exact numbers because of all the variables involved, but you can come pretty close. The first set of data you need is to know how many people are going to click on your website on first page Google.

This sample of traffic is from Chitika, which analyzed traffic entering their ad network from Google and broke it down by Google results placement. The #1 spot on Google received 34.35% of the clicks, which equaled almost the same amount of traffic when you combine #2, #3, #4 and #5 and way more than #5 through #20 (second page) combined.

We all know #1 is where you want to end up, but it is hard to believe the #1 spot received so much more traffic than the rest of the first page. On a side note, similar studies have shown that large brands like Amazon receive more clicks even though they are not in the #1 spot. This shows people trust brand names.

The largest jump in % is from the top of page 2 to the bottom of page 1. If you able to perform some SEO on your site and move to #10 from #11 you should see a 143% jump in traffic. However, the base number is very low, from 1.11% to 2.71% of overall traffic. As you move up the first page, the jumps do get larger.

The traffic data was based on a sample of 8,253,240 impressions across the Chitika advertising network.

I am sure you have been wondering how you can take advantage of all these social media sites. How do you drive people to your website via Twitter, Facebook or YouTube? For now we will concentrate on Twitter because it is much easier to drive more targeted traffic to your website from Twitter in less time.

We are not talking about spam type traffic. The only way someone will find your content is if they are searching for it. This works the same way as Google. So if you own a flower website and someone is searching for flowers or any type of flower, they would find your flower content, click on the link and land on your website.

What happens after they show up on your website? That comes down to how well your website is optimized to convert that visitor into a paying customer. We can discuss that at another time.

If you want targeted visitors to your website, have more people “follow” your company and eventually buy something from you, then you should take advantage of Twitter.

So how is it that we can provide this service? The answer lies in our proven methods to get your content in front of the millions of people on Twitter every day. We have unique ways to distribute the content so people can find it and visit your website.

What exactly happens when someone uses our Twitter traffic service? We take your current and future content and we start promoting it on Twitter. As people find your content, they show up on your website.

Your unique visitors will start to increase almost instantly and will eventually level off. How many visitors come to your website will depend on the amount of content you have and your content type. If your content has high search volume on Twitter, then your content will be found more.

After more targeted unique visitors land on your website, we can offer services to help optimize your conversions. It can be easier to double your conversion ratio than to double your traffic.

If you are interested in speaking to one of our Twitter professionals, please call 631-615-0024 or send an email.

Reaching #1 on Google can be difficult, but when you have a solid game plan with proven results, it makes the road to #1 so much easier. One of the key components of this process is content marketing. Content marketing is the action of taking content (an article or blog post) and submitting it around the Internet to build backlinks. That sounds pretty easy, right? It can be if the task is put in the hands of a content marketing expert like SEO Pledge.

Reaching #1 on Google with SEO Pledge

Here are some of the key steps to earning #1 Google rankings:

On-site SEO - Make sure that the website is fully optimized for search engines. Without the search engines understanding of which keywords a website wants to be ranked for, it will be very hard to reach the top of Google.

100% Unique Content - Search engines are looking for content that is unique and fresh, which is why social media sites and blogs are usually ranked high in search engine results.

Content Marketing – This is the art of taking one article, “spinning” it (to make one article look like 1,000 unique articles), and submitting it around the Internet to start the backlink building process.

Multi-level Backlinks - Building backlinks (when another website has a link pointing to your website) is important, and building multi-level backlinks is even more important.

And here are some important mistakes to avoid:

Link Farms - Many services that promise to submit content to directory, article or blog sites are link farms. Link farms are bad because once Google figures out they are a link farm, they will penalize any website that is associated with it. Once your website is associated with a link farm, you will see your rankings drop literally overnight.

Optimizing Content - You can write hundreds of beautiful articles, but if they are not optimized for your exact keywords, you are just wasting your time.

Optimizing Backlinks - Similar issue with optimizing content because if you do not create your backlinks correctly, you are not getting the most out of your hard work.

Relevant Backlinks - You need your backlinks to come from relevant websites. If you sell flowers, you do not want car dealerships pointing links to your website. You need to be careful of where your content is being submitted.

Now that you understand some of the basics, lets take a closer look at content marketing done right. Assume your website already has great on-site optimization, as well as excellent blog posts that are updated frequently. The next step is to take those blog posts and perform content marketing.

Title - Make sure that the title is written with the keywords in mind. In other words, if you want your article to be found for “Vitamin Deficiency,” then “Vitamin Deficiency” has to be part of the title.

Keyword Density - How many times do your keywords appear in the article? This is very important because if they don’t appear, how will Google understand that you want to be known for “Vitamin Deficiency?” To accomplish this, make sure that your keywords appear approximately 5 times in every 300 words.

Backlinks - You need to make sure that you have backlinks to your website in the article, while taking care not to over-optimize your backlinks to just one website. The best practice is to rotate through your website and your social media sites, or even individual blog posts and YouTube videos.

Anchor Text - When you create a link in an article, the words that are clickable are called the “anchor text.” The anchor text should be the keywords that you’ve chosen. Therefore, “Vitamin Deficiency” should be the clickable text.

Now that you have great content, you are excited and you want to tell the world about it. You have uploaded the content to your blog, but are not sure what to do next. This is usually the hardest part, and it is recommended to find a reputable company to perform your content marketing. This ensures that your backlinks are built correctly.

SEO Pledge provides sub-contracted work to ad agencies to support their Internet marketing services. How is SEO Pledge different?

Content Networks - You now understand how important it is to NOT get caught up in link farms. SEO Pledge has created many partnerships with tens of thousands of websites (new websites are added everyday) that are NOT considered a link farm. They are 100% separate websites that are real sites (not just built for links) to submit your content to: blogs, article sites and directories, product sites, news feeds, … and the list goes on.

Content Optimization - After content is provided to us, we will double-check for optimization and make sure that the title, keyword density, and links are all set up correctly.

Spinning Content - We will take each article and have it “spun” 3 times. Then we will take each paragraph of every article and mix them up, so that paragraph 1 of article 1 would swap with paragraph 1 of article 2, and so on. This will give the illusion to the search engines, that each article is 100% unique and they will not be seen as duplicated content.

Backlink Optimization - We will double check all of your backlinks to make sure they are setup correctly. This ties into…

Multi-level Backlinks - What exactly is this? We will build your backlinks the best way possible. You will provide us with a list of your websites and we will start building backlinks to all of your sites individually. For example, we will not only build backlinks to your website, we will also build backlinks to your social media sites and any other sites that you control. The stronger your Twitter account is to the search engines, the stronger backlink it will become for your website.

The road to reaching #1 on Google can be long and hard when you travel it alone. With SEO Pledge by your side, the journey will become much easier. If you would like to read one of our case studies that has over 250 keywords ranked #1 on Google, and over 500 keywords ranked on the first page of Google, we would love to share it with you, please contact us via email.

Using social media sites like Twitter is still a mystery to some businesses. The overall objective today, is to keep the content flowing because search engines respond to fresh and unique content. For many companies, the goal is simply to keep their business’s name in front of consumers. To accomplish this, you should ideally promote your company’s content on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and your blog simultaneously, in order to stay in the game.

tweet a day keeps you in game

Putting new (or even recycled) content in front of consumers on a regular basis will keep your company fresh in their minds. For example, if you own a flower shop, your goal is to constantly put your business’s content in front of consumers, so when they think of buying flowers, they automatically think of your company. Everyone thinks of a specific business when they want to buy a product. If you are hungry and want fast food, which fast food company comes to mind first? Or maybe you want to buy a computer. Which store and which brand of computers do you think of first? Most likely, it’s the ones whose image and message you come into contact with the most.

A company can use Twitter for this purpose, but how? You don’t want to be “annoying” with your content distribution and you don’t want to seem like you’re only pushing sales-type content either. How many 10% off coupons can you tweet about before people start ignoring it? The ideal goal is to publish content that keeps the conversation going. Aside from promotional deals and sales, you should Tweet about new products, ideas, trends, and ask questions that promote positive interaction. The key is to get your company’s name out there and keep it out there. When it comes to direct mail, statistics show that it often takes more than 20 times for someone to act on a mailing, and this is if the mailing is exactly the same every time. So how does this translate over to social media? The beauty of social media is that it’s just that…social! Every time that you post information to a site like Twitter, it is also an opportunity to receive information back and truly engage your audience. If you own a restaurant, you can ask for people’s thoughts and ideas for new dishes, or if they’d like it if you started a “live jazz” night. If you own a pet day care facility, you can publish amusing pictures and videos and ask that followers send in ideas for funny titles. No matter what your business, social media tools like Twitter offer the opportunity to keep your company’s name in the forefront of your consumers’ minds.

We understand it can be difficult to find the time to perform these types of tasks, and maybe even more so to produce the content to publish. SEO Pledge provides services to help companies stay in the game by promoting their content, building their list of online “followers,” and keeping their brand in front of consumers.

If you haven’t heard, Google recently changed their algorithm to combat content farms. That means websites with a lot of duplicate content got pushed down in Google’s rankings. Google doesn’t like when a website is created and most of the content is copied from other websites. They want the website that published the original content to appear higher in the rankings.

Lets take a look at HowToGetRidOfStuff.com, which is 100% article based and has over 275 #1 rankings on Google and over 500 first page rankings on Google, primarily with searches starting with “how to get rid of” and “get rid of”. Sites like this have been popping up recently. The problem is most of these sites have copied content on them. HowToGetRidOfStuff.com has 100% unique content, so it actually had an increase in Google rankings after the Google algorithm change.

SISTRIX came up with the below list of the top 25 biggest losers from this Google algorithm change.

The table shows the domain, percentage loss, SISTRIX before and after the update as well as the number of keywords found from the one million dataset for this domain before and after the algorithm-change. It is sorted by the biggest absolut loss in SISTRIX VisibilityIndex. Comparing these results with the announcement from Google, they seem to have reached their goal: a whole lot of low-quality domains lost significant visibility in the US Google-SERPs.

Let’s see in detail what Google did to the affected domains. The first conclusion is quite straightforward: the number of keywords these domains are ranking for dropped dramatically. Looking at mahalo.com as an example, it went from 33,875 keywords before the update to just 9,740 keywords after the update went public – a decrease of more than 70%. These were keywords like “zealand air“ (3), “digg“ (8) or “tax check“ (4) where the domain fell out of the top 100 results. The second outcome deals with the remaining keywords. Here is a chart on which Google result page the keywords of mahalo.com were to be found before and after the algorithm-update:

It’s eye-catching that mahalo.com did not only lose more than 70% of their keywords – the remaining keywords are also ranking much worse than before. More than two third of all keywords for this domain could be found on result page 8, 9 and 10. That’s the reason the SISTRIX value fell even more than the raw count of found keywords.

There was a lot of worry on Wall Street when Demand Media went public. Most felt they relied on Google way too much and could very easily get hurt if Google made any significant changes in their algorithm. So what happen to ehow.com after this big change? Ehow.com actually gained SISTRIX value (from 270 to 310) and Keywords (from 317,320 to 324,021) during the algorithm-change. Looking at the chart below you will see the difference. Maybe its time to buy their stock.

So for example, if you are selling flowers, you can build New-York-Flowers.com, Miami-Flowers.com and so on. This will allow you to target that specific market much easier. Yes, it will take time to build the domain authority, but it’s much easier to reach the top of Google with very specific and highly optimized domains.

What is an authority site? Going with the same example, lets look at Flowers.com. You can build up a highly authoritative domain under Flowers.com and will probably get near the top of Google for many search terms that are involved with the term flowers. This is assuming you do one heck of a job with the on-site and off-site marketing.

An authority site will provide greater credibility with its visitors, while a mini-site will be seen as more of a sales type site. When we build mini-sites, they are usually one or two page sites that are designed to create a lead or push traffic to the corporate site.

Everyone should have an authoritative domain for their company and there are many cases where mini-sites will come in handy. Do not think that you will buy Miami-Flowers.com and boom, you are #1 on Google. There is still a good amount of work that needs to be done to get there.

Whatever strategy you choose, should be chosen day 1. Reason is, no matter which direction you go in will take months to build. Last thing you want to do is go down the wrong road and waste time and money.

Could meta tags be making a comeback?

Google is experimenting with two new meta tags to help it identify the original sources of online content. The tags are called syndication-source and original source. This is an interesting way to tease apart content sources, since tags are easily abused. They went away with the power of meta tags years ago, so we will see how they can combat spam. Since the amount of new content that is published each day and social media presence in search engine results is only going to increase, search engines need to find a way to track content sources.

Could Meta Tags Mean Something Again?

Syndication-Source

Web sites that syndicate their content to others can use the syndication-source meta tag to tell Google that theirs is the one that should be included in Google News. In a perfect world, the tag will be used by both the site that syndicates its content, as well as the site that receives and publishes the syndicated content from another source. The tag looks like this:

meta name=”syndication-source” content=”http://www.domain.com/article.html”

Original-Source

The original-source meta tag can be used by publishers wanting to claim their article as the original version. In a sense, it’s somewhat like the rel=”canonical” tag, which can be used to indicate the canonical version of similar web pages.

Similarly, Google says this meta tag can also be used in the same way publishers link to other sites. For example, since this article is also referencing an announcement on the Google News blog, we could use the original-source tag similarly to how we cite them via a link.

In fact, Google says you can cite several different sources with multiple versions of this tag if you want to credit each one that led to the article you’ve published. The tag looks like this:

meta name=”original-source” content=”http://www.domain.com/article.html”

Spam Problems

Meta tags are an invitation to spam for some people. So there is nothing stopping any content publisher from scraping and re-publishing an article, while using one or both of these tags to claim the original version. Worse, there’s also nothing to stop a high-trust, authoritative site from using, or misusing these tags.

Google’s blog post talks about this being an experiment and needing to see how people use these tags. They will probably spend more time trying to stop the misuse. Google says they may reduce the importance assigned to the metatags on a site if they are abused, and they also reserve the right to remove a site completely from Google News. (Please note these tags are currently being experimented in Google News, not on Google.com.)

Google has a help page on the new meta tags.

Mashable recently posted a great article on the future of social search and SEO. The article is below or you can read it on their site.

At SEO Pledge, we have been noticing constant changes in SEO and social media for years now. The goal to be successful in SEO and social media is to increase your social media presence by building followers on Twitter, friends on Facebook, subscribers and friends on YouTube and most importantly, keep that fresh content flowing. Without a continuous flow of content it will be very difficult to have success with social media.

The main reason why search engines love social media is because it has the most updated and relevant content. The integration of social media and SEO will only increase. So if you haven’t jumped on the social media bandwagon, there is no time like the present.

Maybe you have attempted social media before and just couldn’t figure out how to make it work for you. The most frequent complaint we hear is, I setup all my social media accounts, I updated content, but no one was reading it so I stopped. We completely understand why someone would get turned off from this and it is also the main reason why it is important to fully understand how to build your social media sites first.

Social Search and SEO

Facebook and Bing announced last week an agreement that would allow Microsoft’s search engine to return results based on the Facebook “Likes” of the searcher’s friends. Additionally, Google recently began including Twitter updates in its search returns. It’s a natural innovation that fits into the business models of both companies and takes the trend of individualized search results to its next logical level: results tailored to the searcher’s existing social footprint.

SEO insiders have wondered whether this new search innovation would affect placement strategies. And the simple answer is: yes. Yes, there will be changes to the way SEO professionals run their clients’ campaigns. Yes, this will affect the industry as a whole. And yes, we believe SEO professionals will have to adapt to meet ever-evolving needs.

Changing the Method, Not the Mission

But to think that this development is rocking the SEO world is to misunderstand the realities of the industry. In its roughly 15 years of existence, SEO has grown from being a small wildcat operation run by webmasters and content services to being one of the most dynamic, fast-growing sectors of the tech market. The reason for this rapid growth is because — not in spite –- of the constantly evolving nature of search engines.

Of course, as with any complex question about a dynamically evolving industry, there is a caveat. While the Bing-Facebook agreement and the recent updates to Google will change elements of how we do our business, the fundamentals will remain the same. As much as innovation shapes the day-to-day processes of optimization, the core foundations of the industry remain unchanged. The goal was — and still is — putting clients at the top of results pages, whether this is through organic search, paid search or social media.

Social media is nothing new in the world of online marketing. Facebook alone has 500 million users. We have already seen certain Twitter feeds included in Google search results. Before long, results may integrate other social networking sites, like Foursquare, Gowalla, Brightkite and myriad other sites that haven’t even been developed yet. For SEO professionals, this change highlights the need to integrate social networking if they haven’t already.

The Bing-Facebook agreement is indicative of the many changes that have taken SEO from a small-time game to a major, innovative industry. SEO is not about counter-punching, and it’s not about simply reacting to the changing search-engine landscape. Instead, it is about growing alongside search engines. It is about evolving with them to ensure that searchers get the results they need.

SEO Firms Must Become Digital Media Agencies

For years now, successful SEO firms have not been focusing their efforts strictly on organic search results. They’ve been steadily evolving along with changes in search engines: new Google algorithms, the emergence of Bing, the development of Google Local, instant searches, paid search, and searchable Twitter feeds. At my company, we believe that to be successful, SEO firms need to become something more advanced: Digital Media Agencies.

A modern DMA resembles an SEO firm from 2002 in the way that a Ferrari resembles a Model T. The basic elements remain the same, but sophistication and complexity have resulted in a better product. DMAs are about handling the many online representation needs of their clients. While top search engine placement remains the major goal, it is just one aspect of what they seek to do. A DMA also seeks to manage a client’s online reputation, create and maintain their social presence, and handle the many other aspects of a client’s online brand.

Will SEO professionals have to change their strategy in reaction to a new social media paradigm? The answer is yes. Their evolution into full-fledged Digital Media Agencies is imperative. And as the social and search industries continue to change, so too will DMAs need to innovate.
